This series of intimate paintings of blackberry brambles and tableau toyscapes express the division of the interior of the mind and the exterior of the world. A set of interior thoughts are hedged in by the physical world. These paintings are to be hung in groupings of twos and threes.
Blackberry brambles are compressed, cropped and gesturally rendered. The brush strokes and loose mark-making reflect the energy and intensity that mimic the complexity of the natural, physical world. I grew up on the West Coast and as a child I loved the walls and tunnels of brabbles and the gigantic free delicous fruit.
Still life paintings of toyscapes are interior tableaus. The toy set-ups made by my children at play are my reference material. These are fictional and miniature spaces that can contain the weighty dramas of human relationships and the awareness of mortality.

My children making Playmobil setups.
I take photos of these toy setups at night when the remnants of their play ideas are sitting so still.
